Short answer: To buy genuine Ayurvedic medicines online in India, buy from a seller that names the maker, shows clear photos of the pack, gives batch and expiry details, and lets you speak to a real person. Check the label for the manufacturer's name, an Ayurvedic licence number and a printed MRP. Be careful with any seller that promises a cure.
More people in India now buy Ayurvedic medicines online. It saves a trip to the shop, and it makes it easier to find classical products from Kerala that are hard to get in other cities. But a screen cannot show you a pack in your hand, so a little care goes a long way. This checklist takes about five minutes and works for any online store.
1. Look for the maker's name, not just the seller's
Every genuine Ayurvedic product carries the name and address of the company that made it. Well-known Kerala makers include Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, Rajah Ayurveda, Nupal Ayurveda and CNS Ayurveda Chikitsalayam. If a listing only shows a generic name such as "herbal oil", with no maker, it is hard to know what you are getting.

2. Read the label details in the photos
Zoom into the product photos. A proper Ayurvedic label usually shows:
- The product name and the classical reference it follows, for example "Sahasrayogam" or "Ashtangahrudayam".
- A list of ingredients, often with their Sanskrit and common names.
- The manufacturing licence number, the batch number, and the manufacturing and expiry dates.
- The pack size and the printed maximum retail price (MRP).
- Directions for use and any cautions.
If the photos are blurry, or the label cannot be read, ask the seller for a clearer picture before you order.
3. Check that the price makes sense
The MRP is printed on the pack. A price far below it, with no explanation, deserves a question. A price above the MRP is not allowed. Remember that the price you see should include taxes, so the number you pay should match the number on the page.
4. Ask about batch and expiry before you buy
Ayurvedic medicines have a shelf life. Oils, fermented tonics (arishtams and asavams) and lehyams such as chyavanaprasam each last for a different length of time. Reputable sellers ship sealed packs from current stock and are happy to tell you the expiry date. Once you receive the order, check the seal and the dates before you open it.
5. Look for contact details you can use
A genuine store tells you who it is. Look for a company name, a postal address, an email address and a phone number that is answered. At Ayurvedic Mall, for example, you can call or WhatsApp +91 94971 99884 from Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, and the company details are in the footer of every page. If a store hides these, think twice.
6. Be wary of promises to cure
Ayurveda is a traditional system of health care, and many of its formulations have been used for generations. But no responsible seller promises that a product will cure a disease. Phrases such as "guaranteed cure" or "100% results in 7 days" are red flags. Look instead for plain descriptions of what a product is traditionally used for, and what its ingredients are.
7. Ask a physician about medicines you take internally
Some Ayurvedic medicines are meant to be taken only on a physician's advice. This matters most if you are pregnant, nursing, elderly, giving a product to a child, or already taking regular medicines. An Ayurvedic physician can tell you the right product, the right amount and how long to take it. A store can help you find a product and explain how it is made, but it cannot diagnose you.
8. Know how to return a damaged or wrong item
Even careful sellers occasionally send a pack that was damaged in transit. Before you buy, check the shipping and returns policy and see how to reach customer care. Keep the outer box and take a photo of the problem as soon as the parcel arrives.
A quick checklist to keep
- The maker's name is on the pack and in the listing.
- The label is readable in the photos.
- The price matches the MRP and includes taxes.
- Batch and expiry details are available.
- The store shows a company name, address, email and phone number.
- The listing makes no promise to cure.
- You have asked a physician about anything you will take internally.
- You know the returns policy.
